Discourse on AI vs Traditional Writing continues as finding the right balance is imperative

Change is constant in life, especially with advancements in technology reshaping how things are done. The manifestation of such changes are reflected in the different tools and devices used for personal, professional and academic works. In a world where technology rapidly transforms how we work and communicate, what impact does artificial intelligence (AI) have on the art of writing?
The evolution of certain aspects creates opportunities for the sustained coexistence of others, this resonates in both AI-driven writing and traditional writing practices. Aligning with Heraclitus' saying, “You could not step twice into the same river,” (Graham, 2007) although there are new methods, writing stays true to its purpose of providing knowledge, information and awareness.
Writers started with the traditional way of writing wherein expertise on a specific matter is significant and are often created from scratch, allotting time, effort and extensive research. From the traditional pen and paper materials used by many comes the entry and features of AI. The use of systems, both software and hardware, expounds on the capability of AI to conduct activities accelerating human intelligence and efficiency (Laskowski, 2023).
In every breakthrough, it is the responsibility of users and writers to understand and balance the pros and cons of these two widely-used methods of academic and creative writing.
The employment of AI in writing offers advantages such as efficiency, consistency, time-saving, language analysis, and customization (AIContentfy Team, 2023). Considering that this tool utilizes information available on the Internet, its speed surpasses the human capability in terms of producing written works, while also maintaining consistency which is beneficial in generating numerous outputs with strict deadlines. AI significantly boosts productivity by reducing the time needed for writing, allowing for greater output (Faster Capital, 2024). With its large database, it allows for a quick and easy improvement of the quality of the written work as stated in the prompt inputted by the user. The participation of users in terms of adapting to specific preferences enhances personalization.
However, AI also has drawbacks that highlight the strengths of traditional writing. These are lack in human creativity, limited emotional understanding, and potential errors (AIContentfy Team, 2023). With AI’s reliance on the Internet, it lacks fresh ideas as well as the empathy and emotions incorporated in every human’s experiences showcasing the depth incorporated in traditional writing. This content is what readers often seek, the connection of the written piece, which makes it less engaging if not present. Another con is AI’s inability to adapt and be flexible as opposed to human writers as they are limited to the prompt given to them. In addition, AI is not able to correct errors, incomplete data and biases in published articles online which proves traditional writings advantage in this matter (Faster Capital, 2024).
Catered with features that can help alleviate the twist and turns of writing, AI proves its power as time passes. It is true that “with great power, comes great responsibility,” as the ethical implications of AI are significant, raising concerns about the integrity of writing and education when humans rely solely on AI to replace human-authored content. (Garbarine, 2023). Keeping in mind the limitations of these technologies, people are bound to exceed limits by treating these as tools that can enhance rather than replace human skills and capabilities in order to protect the integrity of education and promote intellectual development along with higher-order reasoning.
It is a matter of finding the right mix between the two methods of writing. It is a must to reach the central point where both advantages are applied and aims to address the weaknesses of each.
Ultimately, it all lies in the hands of the users and writers as to how they will harness the optimal benefit of AI while still adhering to the ethical aspect of writing. The balance between its pros and cons should be well-understood as to continue to garner outputs that satisfy the objectives of writing—to provide knowledge and awareness to its readers.
