In the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, access to education is emphasized as a right of every child. With primary education being free and secondary and higher education being available, the convention envisions an educated youth. However, in the present, not every child has access to quality education. This lack of access hinders the development of the child, pulling them back from achieving their full potential. Furthermore, the situation places their future at risk; as the future leaders of society, this compromises the future of the world as a whole. Through the project Batang Mataliknows, the UST Volunteers for UNICEF seeks to address the issue of access to education at the grassroots level. By providing education on even the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, these children can take the first step towards their formation.

The beneficiaries of this project begins with the child, rooting outwards to their community. Through this process of education, children can begin to make informed decisions for themselves, for their family, and eventually, for their community. By equipping these children with the capacity to participate in society, even in the most basic form of reading, writing, and arithmetic, the security of their future comes to light. In addition, opportunities to learn and develop open up for these children as they begin to understand the ways of the world more. As the stepping stone for these children’s growth, the organization seeks the effective formation of these children through education.

Batang Mataliknows primarily focuses on equipping children with arithmetic and literacy skills. With the monthly tutorial sessions conducted, children are provided an avenue from which they can acquire and hone their proficiency in reading, writing, and solving numerical problems. Through this project, UST Volunteers for UNICEF, alongside Elementary Education Society, helped in fulfilling the right of children to learn and have access to education.
